Turn off motion smoothing on an LG TV: TruMotion settings explained

Find TruMotion in a 2023–2025 LG webOS TV's Clarity settings, turn it off or choose a milder mode, and adjust De-Judder and De-Blur yourself.

Applies to: LG webOS TVs with TruMotion, per LG's 2023–2025 user guides (for example C3, C4, C5 OLEDs); options vary by model, input and picture mode.

Compatibility & scope

Based on three editions of LG's English (UK/EU) webOS TV user guide, which LG's UK support pages link for the 2023 C3, 2024 C4 and 2025 C5 OLED TVs. LG states that configurable items differ by model, and that available options depend on the input signal and picture mode. “Motion smoothing” and “soap opera effect” are common names, not LG's terms. TruMotion is LG’s motion smoothing

On LG webOS TVs, the setting that smooths fast motion is TruMotion. If films look unnaturally smooth (the “soap opera effect”), turn it off: press the Settings (gear) button, then go to All Settings → Picture → Advanced Settings → Clarity → TruMotion → Off.

If you want less smoothing but not none, LG offers milder modes and a manual option.

Turn TruMotion off

  1. Start playing what you want to watch: an app, an HDMI device or live TV. The available options can depend on the input and picture mode.
  2. Press the Settings (gear) button on the remote. Press and hold it to open All Settings directly.
  3. Select All Settings → Picture → Advanced Settings → Clarity.
  4. Select TruMotion and choose Off.

Watch a scene with movement to compare. LG’s guide doesn’t say whether your choice carries over to other inputs. If another input still looks smooth, use Apply to All Inputs (in Picture → Advanced Settings) to apply your current picture settings everywhere.

Choose a TruMotion mode

LG’s user guides describe these settings:

Option What LG says it does
Off Turns TruMotion off.
Cinematic Movement Adjusts motion judder so it feels like a movie theatre.
Natural Makes images with a lot of motion look natural and clear.
Smooth Movement Softens fast-moving pictures.
User Selection Lets you set TruMotion yourself.

LG doesn’t rank the modes or give their default. If you only want to reduce smoothing, try each mode on the same scene and keep the one that looks right.

Set De-Judder and De-Blur yourself

Choose User Selection to unlock the manual controls. LG says the advanced settings can be changed only in this mode:

  • De-Judder adjusts juddering on the screen.
  • De-Blur reduces the blurring effects of motion.
  • OLED Motion or Motion Pro (the name depends on the model; the 2023 guide also lists OLED Motion Pro and NanoCell Motion Pro) makes video clearer by reducing afterimages.

If you can’t change these controls, check that TruMotion is set to User Selection.

If TruMotion is missing or greyed out

LG notes that configurable items differ by model, and that the options available depend on the input signal and selected picture mode. Try another picture mode, or check the setting while playing a different source. To undo your experiments, Picture → Advanced Settings → Reset resets the settings for the current picture mode.

Common questions

Is TruMotion the same as Real Cinema?

No. Real Cinema is a separate item in the same Clarity menu; LG describes it as optimizing the display for movies. TruMotion controls motion processing.

Will a factory reset change TruMotion?

A factory reset returns all settings to their defaults, so check TruMotion again after a reset.
