Compatibility & scope
Based on three editions of LG's English (UK/EU) webOS TV user guide (w23_mr3_eu03, w24_mr2_eu03, w25_e02), which LG's UK support pages link for the 2023 C3, 2024 C4 and 2025 C5 OLED TVs, and the 2025 OLED55C5ELB owner's manual. The timer and Energy Saving settings match across the three guides; LG says Auto Power Off after 4 Hours and Energy Saving's Auto Power Off aren't supported on some models. The 15-minute no-signal shutdown is stated only in the 2025 owner's manual; the 2023 and 2024 documents reviewed don't mention it. The guides don't list the time periods Energy Saving's Auto Power Off offers, or how to tell whether the overheating protection has acted. Set-top box power sync settings belong to the box. The 2014 LB-series TVs covered elsewhere on this site have different menus. Documentation reviewed; no TV tested for this article.

Why a 2023–2025 LG TV switches itself off
A 2023–2025 LG webOS TV that turns off on its own is usually following one of its own settings. LG’s user guides name these causes:
- Sleep Timer or Power Off Timer is set, in General → System → Time & Timer → Timers.
- Auto Power Off after 4 Hours (same Timers menu): the TV was turned on by Power On Timer or a programme Reminder, and nobody pressed a button for 4 hours.
- Auto Power Off in General → Energy Saving: the TV turns off if no button is pressed for the period you set, however it was turned on.
- A set-top box that is set to switch the TV off with it.
- No input signal: LG’s 2025 C5 owner’s manual adds that the TV turns off after 15 minutes without an input signal and without the remote being used.
If none of these settings match, LG says the TV’s internal protection circuit may have switched it off because the inside got too hot. That’s a reason to contact LG, not something to fix in the menus.
This page is for 2023–2025 webOS TVs. For a 2014 LB-series TV, see the LB-series auto-off checks.
Note when it happens
How the TV turns off points to the cause, so watch for a pattern before changing settings:
| When the TV turns off | Most likely setting |
|---|---|
| At a set clock time, perhaps on the same days each week | Power Off Timer or Sleep Timer |
| About 4 hours after it switched itself on by Power On Timer or for a programme Reminder | Auto Power Off after 4 Hours |
| After a stretch with no button presses, even if you turned it on yourself | Auto Power Off in Energy Saving |
| When you turn off the set-top box | The box’s TV power sync |
| About 15 minutes after a source stopped sending a picture | No-signal auto-off (2025 owner’s manual) |
Check the timers
- Press the Settings (gear) button on the remote.
- Select All Settings (the gear icon on screen).
- Go to General → System → Time & Timer → Timers.
- Look at each timer:
- Sleep Timer: if it shows a time, select Off.
- Power Off Timer: if Enable the function is On and you didn’t mean to set it, switch it Off. Check Timer Repeat too: it repeats the timer on the days selected, while None runs it only once.
- Auto Power Off after 4 Hours: set it to Off if your TV turns on by Power On Timer and you want it to stay on without pressing a button. LG says some models don’t have this option.
LG notes that the Power On Timer and Power Off Timer need the correct time. If the clock is wrong, a timer can act at an unexpected moment. You can set the time in the same Time & Timer menu.
Check Energy Saving’s Auto Power Off
This setting is separate from the timers, and it’s easy to miss because it sits with the brightness options:
- Press the Settings (gear) button and select All Settings.
- Go to General → Energy Saving.
- Find Auto Power Off. If it’s set, the TV turns off whenever no button is pressed for that period. Change it so it no longer cuts in while you watch.
LG says some models don’t support this option. The guides don’t list the periods you can choose or say whether one of them is off.
If the screen goes dark but the TV is still on
Two situations look like the TV turning off when it hasn’t:
- Screen Off (General → Energy Saving → Screen Off) turns off only the picture; sound keeps playing. Press any button except Power and the volume buttons to bring the picture back.
- During a software update, LG says the screen may turn off after 4 hours without any button press, but the TV doesn’t fully go into standby until the installation has finished. Leave it plugged in. The update settings are in All Settings → Support → Software Update.
The opposite symptom, a wallpaper or clock that stays on screen after you press Power, is Always Ready. See turning off Always Ready.
If it turns off with the set-top box or with no signal
Set-top box: LG says some set-top boxes can be set to turn the TV off when the box turns off. To stop it, turn off the TV power sync function on the set-top box. That setting is on the box, so check its manual or ask your provider. The TV’s own SIMPLINK power options work the other way: Main Power Off turns connected devices off when the TV turns off, and Main Power On turns the TV on with a device, so neither explains the TV switching off with the box. The SIMPLINK guide covers both.
No signal: LG’s 2025 C5 owner’s manual says the TV turns itself off when it gets no input signal and the remote isn’t used for 15 minutes. If the TV goes off while a player, games console or computer is idle or asleep, that’s the likely reason. Wake the source, or check that it’s still sending a picture to the input you’re watching. The 2023 and 2024 documents we reviewed don’t mention this behaviour, so don’t rely on the 15-minute figure for those years.
When to contact LG
First rule out the power supply. LG’s 2025 C5 owner’s manual lists an interrupted power supply among the causes, so check that the plug is firmly in, and if the TV is on a power strip, try it in a wall outlet.
Contact LG support if the TV still turns off with every timer and Auto Power Off off, no set-top box sync involved and a source that’s sending a picture. LG’s troubleshooting says the internal protection circuit can switch the TV off when the inside gets unusually hot; the guides don’t describe how to confirm that, so give support the model number and when the shutdowns happen.
If the TV won’t turn back on afterwards, start with the power and standby-light checks in LG TV not responding to the remote.
Common questions
Where is the LG sleep timer?
In All Settings → General → System → Time & Timer → Timers → Sleep Timer. Set when the TV should turn off, or select Off to cancel it.
Will a factory reset stop it?
LG’s troubleshooting doesn’t suggest a reset for this problem; it points to the timer settings, the set-top box and overheating protection. Turn off the settings above first. If you do decide to reset, see factory resetting a 2023–2025 LG TV for what you lose.
