Compatibility & scope
Phone-side steps come from Samsung's US and UK support pages, which are written for Galaxy phones and tablets. Samsung says Smart View isn't available on every device and that screens and settings vary by carrier, software version and model, so labels on your phone may differ. TV-side details come from Samsung's EU English e-manuals for M- to H-series TVs (as listed on Samsung UK support pages). The 2019–2026 manuals point to a Smart View guide in the TV's Connection Guide; the 2017–2018 manuals don't. For non-Samsung Android phones the TV manuals say only that the phone must support a mirroring function and to check the phone's manual, so this page gives no steps for those phones. Tap View and AirPlay are separate features. Content protection, game latency and audio sync are not covered by the sources. Documentation reviewed; no phone or TV tested for this article.

Start Smart View from the phone
On a Samsung Galaxy phone, mirroring to a Samsung smart TV starts on the phone, not the TV. Put both on the same Wi-Fi network, open Smart View from the phone’s Quick settings panel, choose the TV and tap Start now. The first time, the TV may ask you to allow the connection.
Other Android phones: Samsung’s TV manuals say the phone must have its own mirroring feature, such as Screen Mirroring, and to check the phone’s manual to see if it does. Samsung doesn’t document the steps for other brands. The TV-side requirements and checks on this page still apply.
Before you start
- Same network. The TV and phone must be on the same network. Samsung UK says this is deliberate, so that a neighbour can’t broadcast to your TV by mistake.
- Turn the TV on. Samsung’s steps start with the TV on and connected.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi if you can. The TV manuals warn that Smart View may not run smoothly on 2.4 GHz and recommend 5 GHz (5 GHz or 6 GHz in the 2025–2026 manuals). Some models don’t support 5 GHz.
Mirror your Galaxy phone
These are Samsung’s steps for Galaxy phones and tablets:
- Swipe down from the top right of the phone’s screen to open the Quick settings panel.
- Tap Smart View.
- Select your TV from Available devices.
- Tap Start now.
- If you’re asked, enter the PIN shown on the TV, or select Allow on the TV.
The phone’s screen appears on the TV. On models with Multi View, the 2020–2026 manuals say the TV may show it in Multi View next to what you were watching, rather than full screen.
Other ways Samsung lists
- From the phone’s Settings: Samsung UK gives Settings → Connected Devices → Smart View, then choose the TV and allow the connection.
- From SmartThings: if your TV is already in the SmartThings app, open it there, tap the Menu button (three dots) and tap Mirror screen (Smart View). Adding the TV to SmartThings is covered in using your phone as a Samsung TV remote.
Change how the picture fits
If the phone’s picture looks small, change the aspect ratio in the phone’s Smart View menu. Samsung’s US page gives Smart View icon → More options → Settings → Phone aspect ratio, and says 16:9 suits most TVs.
Stop mirroring
- From the phone: tap the Smart View icon, then Disconnect.
- From the TV: press the Return button (the curved arrow) on the remote. The 2020–2026 manuals say this, or disconnecting the phone, turns Screen Sharing off.
Find Samsung’s guide on the TV
The TV has its own step-by-step guide to Smart View in the Connection Guide. It’s useful if you want to see the steps on the big screen:
| Your TV’s menu | Path |
|---|---|
| Source is on the Home screen (2019–2021 TVs: R, T and A series) | Home → Source → Connection Guide → Smartphone → Screen Sharing (Smart View) |
| Home shows a Menu item (2022 B-series TVs) | Home → Menu → Connected Devices → Connection Guide → Smartphone → Screen Sharing (Smart View) |
| Left directional button opens the menu (2023–2026 TVs) | Home → left directional button → Connected Devices → Connection Guide → Smartphone → Screen Sharing (Smart View) |
The 2026 manual says some models use a different entry instead: from the top of the Smart Hub Home screen, Apps → Mobile Connection → Screen Sharing (Smart View). The 2017–2018 manuals have no Smart View guide in the Connection Guide. The 2017 manual covers screen mirroring and the separate Smart View app, and the 2018 manual covers mirroring through SmartThings.
If the TV doesn’t appear or won’t connect
Work through these in order:
- Check the network. Make sure the phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the TV, not mobile data or a guest network. If the TV itself can’t get online, see the Samsung Wi-Fi guide.
- Restart both. Samsung’s advice is to turn the TV and the phone off and on, then try again.
- Allow the connection on the TV. Samsung UK says a phone that hasn’t been given permission can’t mirror. Watch the TV for the prompt and select Allow. If you selected Deny before, or the prompt never appears, see Samsung Device Connection Manager, where the TV keeps its device list and the Access Notification setting.
- Several Samsung TVs at home? Give each one a different name so you can pick the right one in Available devices. The Device Name path for each menu layout is in the Device Connection Manager guide.
- Check for radio interference. The 2019–2026 manuals say that if interference stops the TV connecting to a phone, change the frequency of your wireless access band and try again. For Smart View, the same manuals recommend 5 GHz (5 GHz or 6 GHz in the 2025–2026 manuals) where your TV supports it.
- Check the phone has Smart View. Samsung says it isn’t available on every device. On a non-Samsung phone, look for a screen mirroring feature in its own manual.
The picture stutters or stops now and then: Samsung’s connection notes say video or audio may stop intermittently depending on network conditions, and that Smart View may not run smoothly on 2.4 GHz. A 5 GHz connection, where your TV supports it, is the only fix they suggest.
Common questions
Is this the same as AirPlay or Tap View?
No. AirPlay is for iPhone and iPad; see AirPlay to a Samsung TV. Tap View starts mirroring when you tap a supported Samsung phone on the TV’s edge, and has to be turned on in SmartThings first. Smart View works without either.
Can I control the TV from the phone while mirroring?
Mirroring only shows the phone’s screen. To use the phone as a remote, see using your phone as a Samsung TV remote.
