Connect a phone to a 2014 LG LB-series TV with MHL: phones, cables and ports

Check that your phone, cable and TV port all support MHL, connect to the MHL-labelled HDMI input on a 2014 LG LB-series TV, and see what the Magic Remote can control.

Applies to: 2014 LG LB-series TVs with a labelled MHL input and an MHL-enabled phone.

Compatibility & scope

For the LB63**, LB65**, LB67**, LB68**, LB69**, LB72**, LB73**, LB86** and LB87** families listed in LG manual MFL68027018, revision 1402-REV00 (2014). Ports and supported functions vary by model; confirm that the connection described is present on your set. This is not a guide to every current LG TV and has not been device-tested for this article.

You need an MHL phone, an MHL cable and the MHL port

To show a phone’s screen on a 2014 LG LB-series TV with a cable, all three parts must support MHL (Mobile High-definition Link):

  • an MHL-enabled phone
  • an MHL passive cable
  • the TV input labelled HDMI IN 3 (MHL) or HDMI/DVI IN 4 (MHL), depending on the model

A phone that physically fits a cable isn’t necessarily MHL-enabled. Check the phone maker’s specifications; LG’s manual doesn’t list compatible phones or adapters. MHL is a wired connection and is separate from wireless screen mirroring or AirPlay.

Connect the phone

  1. Find the TV input whose label includes MHL. Not every LB-series TV has both of the ports above, and other HDMI ports won’t work for MHL.
  2. Connect the phone to that port with the MHL passive cable.
  3. Switch the TV to that input to see the phone screen.

LG’s manual doesn’t give phone-side steps, which depend on the phone. If you’re connecting a computer rather than a phone, see the LG PC connection guide.

What the Magic Remote can control

With some MHL phones, you can control the phone with the Magic Remote, and LG says some apps can be operated with the TV remote. Expect partial control at most, depending on the phone and app.

When to unplug the cable

LG says to remove the MHL passive cable from the TV when the phone’s MHL function is turned off, or when the phone is fully charged and in standby.

If your phone or TV doesn’t support MHL

If the phone has no confirmed MHL support, or the TV has no MHL-labelled input, a different cable won’t make this connection work. Check the phone and TV makers’ guidance for a supported way to connect.
