LG Magic Remote pointer disappeared? Fixes for 2014 LB-series TVs

Shake the Magic Remote to bring the pointer back, reset a sluggish pointer, and check range, interference, batteries and pairing on a 2014 LG LB-series TV.

Applies to: 2014 LG LB-series TVs with a compatible Magic Remote; the manual lists AN-MR500.

Compatibility & scope

For the LB63**, LB65**, LB67**, LB68**, LB69**, LB72**, LB73**, LB86** and LB87** families listed in LG manual MFL68027018, revision 1402-REV00 (2014). Features, ports and supplied remotes vary by model; Magic Remote functions require a compatible remote. This is not a guide to every current LG TV and has not been device-tested for this article.

Shake the remote to bring the pointer back

If the pointer has vanished from the screen, gently move the Magic Remote left and right. On 2014 LB-series TVs the pointer hides by design when you press the up, down, left or right buttons. The remote then works like an ordinary remote until you shake it again.

The pointer also disappears when it hasn’t been used for a while, or when the remote is lying on a flat surface. In all of these cases the remote is still paired.

Other ways to show the pointer

  • Press Smarthome, 123/INPUT or the 3D button. 3D is on some remotes only.
  • On some models, turn the Wheel.

If the pointer moves poorly

Move the pointer to the edge of the screen. LG says this resets it when movement isn’t smooth. If it still lags or drops out:

  • Stay within 10 metres of the TV, with nothing in the way.
  • Keep your wireless router more than 1 metre from the TV.
  • Microwave ovens and wireless LAN equipment use the same 2.4 GHz band as the Magic Remote and can interfere with it.

Check the batteries, then the pairing

The Magic Remote uses batteries faster than a normal remote. Replace them (AA on the remote shown in this manual) when the TV shows a low-battery message.

If neither the pointer nor the arrow buttons work, the remote may need pairing again. Follow the Magic Remote pairing guide, which covers registering with Wheel (OK) and the Back + Smarthome unpairing combination.

If only the pointer is missing and the arrow buttons still work, you can keep using the buttons while you try the steps above.
