Pair, re-register or unpair an LG Magic Remote on a 2023–2025 webOS TV

Pair a Magic Remote with Wheel (OK), re-register it with Home + Settings when its pointer won't appear, and unpair it with Back + Home on a 2023–2025 LG webOS TV.

Applies to: LG webOS TVs whose user guide matches LG's 2023–2025 editions (for example the C3, C4 and C5 OLEDs) with a Magic Remote; not 2014 LB-series TVs.

Compatibility & scope

Based on three editions of LG's English (UK/EU) webOS TV user guide (w23_mr3_eu03, w24_mr2_eu03, w25_e02), which LG's UK support pages link for the 2023 C3, 2024 C4 and 2025 C5 OLED TVs, and the 2025 OLED55C5ELB owner's manual. Other LG models may link the same editions, but LG notes that remote buttons, their marks and positions vary by model. The sources don't list which Magic Remote models work with which TVs, or the battery size. Older LG TVs, including the 2014 LB-series covered elsewhere on this site, use different buttons. Documentation reviewed; no TV or remote tested for this article.

Press Wheel (OK) to pair, or hold Home + Settings to re-register

To pair a Magic Remote with a 2023–2025 LG webOS TV, turn the TV on, wait about 20 seconds, point the remote at the TV and press the Wheel (OK) button. The TV shows a message when pairing is complete.

If a remote that used to work no longer shows its pointer, re-register it: point it at the TV and hold Home and Settings (the gear button) together for more than 5 seconds, until instructions appear on the screen.

These button combinations are for LG’s 2023–2025 webOS user guides. 2014 LB-series TVs use different buttons; see the LB-series pairing guide.

Before you start

  • Put batteries in the Magic Remote. LG’s troubleshooting advice says to use alkaline batteries; the guides don’t give the size, so check the markings in the battery compartment.
  • Stay within 10 metres of the TV, with nothing between the remote and the TV.
  • Not every LG TV comes with a Magic Remote. LG sells it separately for TVs that support it.

Pair a new Magic Remote

  1. Turn on the TV.
  2. Wait about 20 seconds so the TV has finished starting up.
  3. Point the Magic Remote at the TV and press Wheel (OK), the centre of the scroll wheel.
  4. The TV registers the remote and shows a pairing-complete message.
  5. Shake the remote gently left and right. A pointer should appear and follow your movement.

If the remote doesn’t register, turn the TV off and on again, wait, and repeat step 3.

Re-register a remote that stopped working

LG gives this as the fix when a remote that was paired before no longer shows its pointer. It is also a reasonable thing to try when the TV ignores a paired remote, although LG’s troubleshooting doesn’t list it for that symptom.

  1. Point the remote at the TV.
  2. Press and hold Home and Settings at the same time.
  3. Keep holding for more than 5 seconds, until instructions appear on the screen.

LG says this removes the old registration and registers the remote again in one go, so you don’t need to unpair it first. If the TV asks you to replace the batteries, do that before trying again.

Unpair the remote to use it with another LG TV

You only need to unpair when you want to move the Magic Remote to a different LG TV.

  1. Press and hold Back and Home together for more than 5 seconds.
  2. The light on the Magic Remote blinks and the registration is cancelled.
  3. Pair it with the other TV using the pairing steps above.

If it still won’t pair or keeps dropping out

  • Move closer. Use the remote within 10 metres and clear anything between it and the TV.
  • Check for interference. LG says wireless routers and microwave ovens can disrupt the remote. The 2025 C5 owner’s manual recommends keeping a Wi-Fi access point more than 0.2 m from the TV.
  • Replace the batteries with fresh alkaline ones, then try the re-register combination again.
  • Restart the TV. Turn it off and on, wait about 20 seconds, and press Wheel (OK) again.

If the remote is a model that didn’t come with your TV, check with LG that it is compatible; these guides don’t list compatible remote models. If a compatible remote still won’t register, contact LG support.

Common questions

Do I need to unpair before re-registering?

No. Holding Home + Settings for more than 5 seconds cancels the old registration and registers the remote again. Back + Home is only for moving the remote to another TV.

My remote’s buttons don’t look like the ones described here.

LG notes that button marks and positions vary by model, and the 2025 guide shows more than one remote layout. Look for the house icon (Home), the gear icon (Settings) and the curved arrow (Back). On the TV, Settings → All Settings → General → Accessibility → Learn Remote Control shows what each button does when you press it.
