Compatibility & scope
Based on TCL UK's English multi-product user manual for TCL and iFFALCON TVs, downloaded from the TCL UK product page for the 85X11L (the file has no revision number; the PDF was created in September 2025). TCL says the features in this booklet are common to most models, that some may be missing from your TV, and that buttons and connectors vary by model. TCL also sells TVs with other operating systems (for example Fire TV), and those are not covered. The booklet does not show where the TV button is (it refers to the model's Quick Start Guide, which we have not reviewed), does not say which models have it, and does not describe what happens on screen after you confirm Source or OK. Documentation reviewed; no TV hardware tested.

One button on the TV runs a small menu
On TCL Google TVs covered by TCL UK’s multi-product booklet, the ⏻ (power) button on the TV works without the remote:
- TV in standby: press it once to turn the TV on.
- TV on: press it to open a row of options: Standby, CH+, CH-, Volume+, Volume-, Source and OK. Each further press moves the highlight one step along the row. Press and hold it for more than 2 seconds to carry out the highlighted option.
Where the button sits varies by model: TCL shows it only in each model’s Quick Start Guide, so this page can’t point to it. TCL also describes the booklet’s features as common to most models, not all, so your TV may differ. TCL TVs that run other systems, such as Fire TV, aren’t covered here.
Find the button
Look up your model’s Quick Start Guide: that’s where TCL shows the button. This page is based on TCL’s booklet only, which doesn’t show it. The booklet does say that some sets label the button POWER/⏻ rather than just ⏻.
Turn the TV on
If the TV is in standby, press the ⏻ button on the TV once. The TV turns on.
If nothing happens, check that the TV is plugged in and switched on at the wall. TCL says that when the power cord is connected, the TV either turns on by itself or goes into standby.
Use the menu while the TV is on
- Press the ⏻ button on the TV once. The row of options appears on screen. In TCL’s illustration, Standby is highlighted first.
- Press the button again, once for each step, until the option you want is highlighted. The order is Standby, CH+, CH-, Volume+, Volume-, Source, OK.
- Press and hold the button for more than 2 seconds to carry it out.
A short press only moves the highlight. Only a long press does anything, so if the TV keeps stepping through the menu instead of acting, hold the button longer.
What each option does:
| Option | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| Standby | Puts the TV into standby |
| CH+ / CH- | Next or previous channel |
| Volume+ / Volume- | Louder or quieter |
| Source | Choosing an input source (TV, HDMI and others); TCL doesn’t show the screen that follows |
| OK | Not described by TCL; on the remote, OK confirms a selection |
TCL’s booklet stops at the menu itself. It doesn’t explain how to move through the input list once Source opens it, or how many volume steps one long press gives. Try the options and watch the screen.
Turn the TV off
To put the TV in standby, step to Standby and hold the button for more than 2 seconds. The TV stays powered at low energy use. To switch it off completely, TCL says to unplug it from the mains.
What the button can’t do
The menu has no Home, Back or Settings option, so the Google TV home screen, apps and the settings menus aren’t reachable this way. TCL’s booklet describes those only with the remote. If the remote has stopped working rather than gone missing, these are the checks TCL lists:
- Batteries: the remote takes two AAA batteries. Replace them with the same type.
- The sensor on the TV: make sure the remote sensor window on the front of the TV isn’t under strong fluorescent light, and wipe it with a soft cloth.
- Pairing: TCL says the remote pairs with the TV the first time you press its Google Assistant button (the microphone), by following the guide on screen. TCL doesn’t describe re-pairing a remote that has lost its connection.
If those checks don’t help, TCL’s booklet points you to the warranty card for service information.
Common questions
Does every TCL TV work like this?
No. This booklet covers TCL Google TV models and says its features are common to most of them, not all. TCL TVs on other systems, such as Fire TV, have their own manuals.
Can I use my phone instead of the remote?
Some TCL Google TVs can be woken from standby by a phone app over Wi-Fi, using a setting called Network standby. It must be turned on in the TV’s settings first, which needs the remote. TCL’s booklet doesn’t describe controlling the TV from a phone beyond that.

TCL UK's X11L page (www.tcl.com/uk/en/tvs/x11l, which redirects to the 85X11L page) lists this file as the 85X11L User Manual. Consulted: the single TV button and multi-function menu box and Switch the TV on and off (p11), the multi-product notice (p3), the power button notes (p2, p7), the remote legend and pairing note (p9), batteries (p10) and Troubleshooting, Remote control does not work (p18). Rendered p9 and p11 checked for the button icons. The booklet says this button can be used when the remote's batteries are run down (p11). The booklet says the button's position is shown in each model's Quick Start Guide, which is not part of this source.
