Samsung TV no picture from HDMI: blank screen, Mode Not Supported or no HDR

What to check when a console, streaming stick, set-top box or PC shows nothing on a Samsung TV, shows "Mode Not Supported", or loses HDR: the input, the cable, HDMI Troubleshooting and Input Signal Plus. Paths for each menu layout.

Applies to: Samsung smart TVs covered by Samsung's 2017–2026 e-manuals (M to H series). HDMI Troubleshooting, HDMI Test and Input Signal Plus depend on the TV's software and model.

Compatibility & scope

Based on Samsung's EU English e-manuals for M- to H-series TVs (as listed on Samsung UK support pages) and the US English 2023 e-manual. Manuals are shared by many models; the covers don't list every model. The TV side only: the manuals don't describe a console's, streaming stick's, set-top box's or PC's output menus, so changing the device's resolution, HDR or colour format is left to that device's manual. HDMI Troubleshooting appears in the 2019 manual's Connection Guide image and in the 2020–2026 text; HDMI Test appears only in the UK C-, D-, F- and H-series manuals and the US 2025–2026 manuals. The small N-series manual (UE24N4300, UE32N5300) has neither HDMI UHD Color nor Input Signal Plus. Supported resolutions and refresh rates differ by model and, on some models, by HDMI port. The 2011 pre-Smart-Hub manual is not covered. Documentation reviewed; no TV or HDMI device tested for this article.

Match what you see to the right fix

Samsung’s manuals treat these as different problems with different fixes:

“Weak or No Signal” while you’re on TV is a different problem: Samsung lists it under the aerial and channels, not HDMI. If you meant to watch an HDMI device, switch the input first (how to change the input).

If the screen stays blank

Work through these in order:

  1. Check you’re on the right input. Open the input list (Source on 2017–2021 TVs, Connected Devices on newer ones) and select the HDMI port the device is plugged into. The input guide has the path for each menu layout.
  2. Check the device is on and connected securely. Samsung’s first check is that the device is firmly connected and turned on. Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
  3. Check the cable. Samsung warns that a non-certified HDMI cable can cause a blank screen or a connection error, and that some cables and devices may not be compatible because of different HDMI specifications. Its other cable notes:
    • Use a certified cable of a recommended type. The 2017–2018 manuals list High Speed HDMI cables; the 2019–2026 manuals add Premium High Speed and Ultra High Speed.
    • Use a cable no thicker than 17 mm.
    • Use a cable shorter than 3 m for the best UHD picture.

Then use the TV’s own HDMI checks below.

Run HDMI Troubleshooting

It checks the HDMI cable and the connection to the device, and takes about 2 minutes:

Your TV’s menu Path to HDMI Troubleshooting
Source is on the Home screen (2019–2021 TVs: R, T and A series) Home → Source → Connection Guide → Video Device → HDMI Troubleshooting
Home shows a Menu item (2022 B-series TVs) Home → Menu → Connected Devices → Connection Guide → Video Device → HDMI Troubleshooting
Left directional button opens the menu (2023–2026 TVs) Home → left directional button → Connected Devices → Connection Guide → Video Device → HDMI Troubleshooting

The 2017–2018 manuals don’t mention HDMI Troubleshooting; their Connection Guide picture shows only how to connect HDMI devices. On those TVs, go on to the next check.

Run the HDMI Test, if your TV has it

Go to Home → left directional button → Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → HDMI Test. Samsung says it checks the device’s signal, the signal history, the HDMI cable connection and HDMI-CEC. It’s listed in the UK manuals for C-, D-, F- and H-series TVs and the US manuals for 2025–2026 TVs, not in older ones, and the 2026 manual notes that names and paths may differ by model.

If the device is a set-top box or cable box

Check the box’s own broadcast signal or network connection. A blank picture can come from the box rather than the TV.

If the TV changes input on its own when a device turns on, or devices switch on with the TV, that’s HDMI-CEC rather than a picture fault; see Samsung Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC).

If you see Mode Not Supported

Every Samsung manual gives the same fix: change the output resolution of the connected device to one the TV supports. Do this in the console’s, streaming device’s or PC’s own video settings; Samsung’s manuals don’t cover those menus. The supported resolutions are listed in your TV’s e-manual, under Supported Resolutions for UHD Input Signals (and, for PCs, the computer resolutions section).

If HDR doesn’t work: Input Signal Plus

Input Signal Plus expands the range of signals an HDMI port accepts. The 2022–2026 manuals say that when it’s Off, the TV can’t receive HDR from an external device, and the 2020–2026 troubleshooting sections give it as the fix for “the HDR of the connected external device turns off”. On 2017–2018 TVs the equivalent setting is HDMI UHD Color.

It’s set separately for each HDMI port:

Your TV’s menu Path
Settings on the Home screen leads straight to General (2017–2018 TVs: M and N series) Home → Settings → General → External Device Manager → HDMI UHD Color
Settings leads straight to General (2019–2021 TVs: R, T and A series) Home → Settings → General → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus
Home shows a Menu item (2022 B-series TVs) Home → Menu → Settings → All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus
Left directional button opens the menu; All Settings → Connection contains External Device Manager Home → left directional button → Settings → All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus
Left directional button opens the menu; External Device Manager is under General & Privacy Home → left directional button → Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus

The fourth layout is in Samsung’s US manual for 2023 TVs and the UK manual for some small and budget models (such as the UE32H5000F). The fifth is in the UK manuals for C-, D-, F- and H-series TVs. If External Device Manager isn’t under Connection, look under General & Privacy.

  1. Open the setting using the path for your menu.
  2. Move to the HDMI port your device is connected to.
  3. Press Select to set it to On. Samsung warns that the screen may flicker when you do this.
  4. Go back to the device and check the picture.

What Samsung’s tables show: with the setting Off, a 4K port at 50/60 Hz accepts only 8-bit 4:2:0 signals. 10-bit signals, other colour formats and, on models that support it, 120 Hz are listed only with it On. Samsung states the HDR part directly (no HDR from an external device while the setting is Off) and gives Input Signal Plus as a fix for a blank PC screen. That a console or streaming device set to 10-bit, 4:4:4 or 120 Hz output may also show nothing until the setting is on is our reading of the tables, not something the manuals say. Supported formats also vary by model and, on some models, by HDMI port.

When to turn it off: Samsung says that if a device supports only UHD at 24 Hz or 30 Hz, or only Full HD, Input Signal Plus may not be available for it, and you should turn it Off. If a picture disappeared after you turned it on for an older device, set that port back to Off.

If a PC screen is blank or flickers

The 2022–2026 manuals give this sequence for a PC on HDMI:

  1. Check the PC’s power supply.
  2. Unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable between the PC and the TV.
  3. If the screen still doesn’t appear, check whether the PC has gone to sleep, then set Input Signal Plus to On for that port (path above).
  4. Make sure the PC’s resolution is one the TV supports. Samsung says a mismatched resolution can cause a blank or flickering screen.

Common questions

Does Input Signal Plus make the picture flicker?

Samsung says the screen may flicker at the moment you switch it on for a port. If the brightness keeps changing while you watch, that’s usually a different cause: see Samsung’s energy-saving features, such as Brightness Optimisation and Motion Lighting.

The picture is fine but there’s no sound. Is that the same problem?

No. For a soundbar on HDMI ARC or eARC, see Samsung TV HDMI ARC or eARC has no sound. For a PC connected with a DVI-to-HDMI cable, Samsung says you need a separate audio cable.
