Compatibility & scope
Based on Samsung's EU English e-manuals for M- to H-series TVs (as listed on Samsung UK support pages) and the US English 2023 e-manual, with the 2024–2026 US manuals checked for the edit gesture. Manuals are shared by many models; the covers don't list every model. C-series TVs appear with both the down-button and the press-and-hold layouts, depending on software. The manuals say the edit options differ by port type and that Universal Remote may not be offered on every model or region. They don't describe the rename screen itself, which icons are offered, or how to remove an input from the Home screen. Documentation reviewed; no TV tested for this article.

Switch to another input
Open your TV’s list of inputs and select the device. The TV then shows that device’s picture. If your remote has a SOURCE button (Samsung’s manuals mention it on the standard remote), press it to open the list directly. Otherwise, open it from the Home screen:
| Your TV’s menu | Where the input list is | To open the edit menu on an input |
|---|---|---|
| Source is on the Home screen (2017–2021 TVs: M, N, R, T and A series) | Home → Source | Press the up directional button |
| Home shows a Menu item (2022 B-series TVs) | Home → Menu → Connected Devices | Press the down directional button |
| Left directional button opens the menu | Home → left directional button → Connected Devices | Press the down directional button. If no menu opens, press and hold Select instead |
On TVs with the left-button menu, the gesture depends on the TV’s software, not on what the list looks like. Samsung’s US manuals for 2023–2024 TVs and the UK manual for some small and budget models (such as the UE32H5000F) use the down button. The UK manuals for C-, D-, F- and H-series TVs and the US manuals for 2025–2026 use press and hold Select.
- Open the input list using the path for your menu.
- Move to the device you want, such as HDMI 2.
- Press Select. The TV switches to that device.
To go back to aerial or cable channels, choose TV in the same list.
Rename an input or change its icon
Renaming helps when several HDMI ports have similar devices: you can change HDMI 1 to the name of your console or box.
- Open the input list (see the table above).
- Move the focus to the input you want to rename.
- Use the edit gesture for your TV from the table: up, down, or press and hold Select. A small menu appears.
- Select Edit. Samsung says this lets you rename the input and change its icon (the 2017 manual mentions only the name).
- Change the name or icon on the screen that opens.
Samsung’s manuals don’t describe the Edit screen itself, so the exact steps and the icons you can pick depend on your TV. They also note that the options in this menu differ by port type, so you may not see Edit on every input.
Pin an input to the Home screen
To switch to a device in one step from the Home screen, add it there:
- Open the input list and move the focus to the input.
- Use the edit gesture for your TV.
- Select Add to Home.
The input then appears on the Home screen for quick switching. The manuals don’t say how to remove it from the Home screen again.
Other options in the same menu
- Information shows details about the connected device.
- Universal Remote sets up your Samsung remote to control the device. It appears in this menu in the 2018–2022 manuals and the 2026 manual, but not in the manual for M-series (2017) and some N-series TVs. It’s also a separate item in the input list itself: Universal Remote on 2017–2022 TVs, Universal remote setup from 2023. Samsung says it may not be available on every model or in every region. Registration is done by following the on-screen instructions.
If the TV changes input by itself, or a soundbar has no sound
- The device switches to its own input when you turn it on, or the TV turns on with it: that is HDMI-CEC, which Samsung calls Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC). It’s in the TV’s settings under External Device Manager; you can also turn off HDMI-CEC on that device.
- A soundbar on the HDMI ARC or eARC port has no sound: that is a sound-output problem, not an input. See Samsung TV HDMI ARC or eARC has no sound.
- A newly connected device: Samsung notes that when you connect a device that supports universal remote control, such as a Blu-ray player or game console, and turn it on, the TV may switch to it automatically or offer to set up the Universal Remote. This depends on the device and region.
Common questions
My Samsung remote has no SOURCE button. How do I change input?
Use the on-screen route in the table: Home, then Source or Connected Devices. Samsung’s manuals mention the SOURCE button only for the standard remote control; the route through the Home screen works on all the layouts above.
Does renaming an input change anything on the device?
No. Samsung describes it as changing the input port’s name and icon on the TV, for easy identification.
