LG TV doesn't detect a USB drive? Hub and power checks (2014 LB-series)

Connect the drive directly instead of through a hub, add external power if it needs it, and find it in SmartShare on a 2014 LG LB-series TV.

Applies to: 2014 LG LB-series TVs with USB media playback through SmartShare.

Compatibility & scope

For the LB63**, LB65**, LB67**, LB68**, LB69**, LB72**, LB73**, LB86** and LB87** families listed in LG manual MFL68027018, revision 1402-REV00 (2014). Features, ports and supplied remotes vary by model; Magic Remote functions require a compatible remote. This is not a guide to every current LG TV and has not been device-tested for this article.

Plug the USB device straight into the TV

If a 2014 LG LB-series TV doesn’t detect a USB drive connected through a hub, unplug the hub and connect the drive directly to the TV’s USB port. LG says some USB hubs don’t work with these TVs. A hub that fails doesn’t mean the drive or the TV’s port is faulty.

Check the connection and power

  1. If the drive is on a hub, connect it directly to the TV instead.
  2. If the drive needs its own power supply (some external hard drives do), connect it.
  3. Open SmartShare and look for the drive and its files.

LG gives USB flash memory, external hard drives and USB memory-card readers as examples of storage you can connect. That list doesn’t mean every drive size or enclosure works.

If the drive appears but a file won’t play

That’s a different problem: the connection works, so check whether the TV supports the file’s format. The format lists are in the TV’s built-in User Guide for your model.

Open the TV’s built-in User Guide

On the Magic Remote, press Smarthome, select User Guide and press Wheel (OK). Some remotes have a dedicated User Guide button. Look for the sections on USB storage and media playback.

If a direct connection with the right power still isn’t detected, contact LG support with the full model number.

Common questions

Which file systems and drive sizes does the TV support?

The USB connection page of the 2014 manual doesn’t list file systems, maximum capacity or codecs. Check the built-in User Guide for your TV.

Should I format a drive the TV can’t detect?

LG’s first step is a direct connection, with external power if the drive needs it, not formatting. Formatting erases everything on the drive, so check your model’s requirements and copy your files elsewhere before considering it.
