Hisense AP12 portable AC remote: Super, iFeel, Sleep, timers and the other buttons

What each button on the remote for the Hisense AP12HW4RNPS00-SM portable air conditioner (Hisense Chile) does, how to set the clock and timers, why only Sleep 1 applies, and which buttons Hisense marks as optional or not for portables.

Applies to: Hisense portable AC remote, per the manual Hisense Chile lists for the AP12HW4RNPS00-SM; the manual itself prints no model. Not wall splits or other regions' models.

Compatibility & scope

Based only on the English section of Hisense's portable air conditioner use and installation instructions (document 4346179-02, printed on the back cover; the PDF metadata says 4346179-01), downloaded from Hisense Chile as the AP12HW4RNPS00-SM(HSN1-CL) manual. The remote pages are generic Hisense remote text: Hisense marks Clean mode, Power control, left/right swing and Sleep 2–4 as not suitable for portable air conditioners, and marks SMART, both swing buttons, QUIET, ECONOMY and DIMMER as invalid for some models and LOCK as optional, without saying which apply to this model. Heating is available only on heat-pump versions, and the manual doesn't say whether this model is one. Wi-Fi is mentioned only as optional on units with a Wi-Fi logo; the manual contains no app setup. Hisense wall-split remotes are covered by a separate remote manual that we haven't reviewed, so nothing here should be assumed to apply to them, or to Hisense portables sold in other regions. Documentation reviewed; no air conditioner was tested for this article.

What the main buttons do

On the Hisense AP12 portable remote, MODE steps through Cooling, Dry, Fan Only and Heating, FAN sets the speed, and TEMP + and TEMP − set the temperature. SUPER is fast cooling at the lowest setting. IFEEL makes the unit use the temperature measured at the remote. SLEEP starts a night program; on a portable, use only Sleep 1. TIMER ON and TIMER OFF start or stop the unit at a clock time, so set CLOCK first.

Hisense Chile publishes this manual as the one for the AP12HW4RNPS00-SM, but the manual itself prints no model number, so check that your remote has the buttons in the table below. The remote is a general Hisense design. Several of its buttons are marked “invalid for some models” or “not suitable for portable air conditioners”, and the manual doesn’t say which ones work on this model. If a button seems to do nothing, check the notes below before assuming the remote is faulty.

Before you start

  • Batteries: two LR03 (AAA, 1.5 V) batteries. Hisense says not to use rechargeable batteries. Replace both with new ones of the same type when the remote’s display gets dim, or after about 6 months.
  • Removing the batteries clears the remote: your preset settings are lost and the timer goes back to zero.
  • Range: aim the remote at the signal receptor on the unit, up to 23 ft (7 m) away.
  • Give it time after a mode change: when you change modes while the unit is running, the compressor stops for 3 to 5 minutes. Pressing another button during that time can restart the wait.

Set the mode, fan and temperature

  1. Press MODE until the symbol for the mode you want shows: Cooling, Dry, Fan Only or Heating. Heating isn’t available on cooling-only units.
  2. Press FAN to step through Auto, High, Medium and Low. In Fan Only you get High, Medium and Low. In Dry the fan is set for you and FAN has no effect.
  3. Press TEMP + or TEMP − to change the set temperature by 1 degree. In Cooling and Heating the range is 16–30 °C (61–86 °F). In Fan Only you can’t set a temperature.

In Dry the unit picks the temperature. The remote lets you nudge it up or down, but Hisense says a portable can only be adjusted by up to 2 °C either way.

To switch the display between °C and °F, press and hold MODE and TEMP − together for 3 seconds.

SUPER: cool down fast

Press SUPER while the unit is in Cooling, Dry or Fan Only mode. The fan goes to High and the set temperature jumps to 16 °C (61 °F). In Heating, SUPER sets 30 °C (86 °F) with Auto fan. The Super symbol shows on the remote’s display.

Super keeps running until you leave it. To return to your previous setting, press SUPER, MODE, FAN, POWER or SLEEP. While Super is on, SMART and ECONOMY have no effect.

SMART: let the unit choose

If your remote’s SMART button works on this unit, pressing it puts the unit in automatic (fuzzy logic) operation, whether the unit is on or off. The unit picks the mode and temperature from the room temperature:

Room temperature Heat-pump units Cooling-only units
21 °C (70 °F) or below Heating, target 22 °C (72 °F) Fan Only
21–23 °C (70–73 °F) Fan Only Fan Only
23–26 °C (73–79 °F) Dry, set 2 °C below room temperature after 3 minutes Same
Above 26 °C (79 °F) Cooling, target 26 °C (79 °F) Same

In Smart mode you can still press FAN to change the speed and the swing button to change the airflow direction. Press MODE to leave Smart mode. SMART doesn’t work while Super is on.

IFEEL: measure the temperature at the remote

Press IFEEL once. The signal symbol appears on the remote’s display, and the remote’s own sensor reports the temperature where you are, so the unit can adjust to it. Leave the remote where the unit can receive its signal. Press IFEEL again to turn it off; Hisense suggests doing that when you stop the air conditioner, to save energy.

Sleep: use Sleep 1 only

Each press of SLEEP moves to the next step: Sleep 1, Sleep 2, Sleep 3, Sleep 4, then Sleep off. Hisense marks Sleep 2, 3 and 4 as not suitable for portable air conditioners, so press SLEEP once and check that the remote shows the Sleep 1 symbol.

Sleep works in Cooling, Heating or Dry. With Sleep 1:

  • The fan goes to Low.
  • In Cooling, the set temperature rises gradually over 2 hours, by up to 2 °C (Hisense prints this as 2 °F too), then stays there.
  • In Heating, it falls by up to the same amount over 2 hours, then stays there.
  • The unit turns itself off after 8 hours.

To cancel Sleep, press SUPER, SMART, MODE or FAN, or keep pressing SLEEP until Sleep is off. Don’t hold ECONOMY for 5 seconds during Sleep: that starts Power control mode, which isn’t meant for portables.

Set the clock and the timers

The timers work by clock time, so set the clock on the remote first.

Set the clock

  1. Press CLOCK. The time flashes on the remote.
  2. Press TEMP + or TEMP −. Each tap changes the time by 1 minute; hold for about 1.5 seconds to change it in 10-minute steps, and longer to change it by the hour.
  3. Press CLOCK again to set it.

Turn on at a set time

  1. Press TIMER ON. “ON 12:00” flashes on the remote.
  2. Use TEMP + or TEMP − to set the time, the same way as the clock.
  3. Press TIMER ON again to confirm. You hear a beep and “ON” stops flashing. On some models the timer light on the unit also comes on. After 5 seconds the remote goes back to showing the clock.

To cancel, press TIMER ON again. You hear a beep and the timer indicator disappears.

Turn off at a set time

Use TIMER OFF in the same way.

Lock, Dimmer, Quiet and Economy

The manual marks all four as optional or “invalid for some models”, so they may do nothing on your unit.

  • Lock: press TIMER ON and TIMER OFF together for 2 seconds. The lock symbol appears on the display. Press the same pair for 2 seconds to unlock. The manual doesn’t list which buttons are locked.
  • Dimmer: press DIMMER to turn off the lights and display on the unit. They come back on when the unit receives another signal from the remote.
  • Quiet: press QUIET for lower-noise operation. MODE, FAN, SMART or SUPER cancels it. Don’t hold QUIET for 5 seconds with the unit in standby: the remote overview says that starts Clean mode, which Hisense marks as not suitable for portables.
  • Economy: press ECONOMY briefly for energy-saving operation. It doesn’t work in Smart or Super mode. Pressing POWER, MODE, TEMP, FAN, SLEEP, QUIET or ECONOMY cancels it. Holding ECONOMY for 5 seconds in Cooling starts Power control mode, which isn’t meant for portables.

Airflow direction

The up/down swing button makes the vertical louver swing automatically; press it again to stop the louver at the angle you want. Hisense says not to move the vertical louvers by hand, because that can make them malfunction. If that happens, turn the unit off, disconnect the power, then reconnect it. The left/right swing button isn’t meant for portables.

If a button doesn’t seem to work

  • Several buttons do nothing: check the batteries and aim at the receptor from within 23 ft (7 m). If you’ve just changed mode, wait 3 to 5 minutes.
  • SMART, QUIET, ECONOMY, DIMMER, swing or LOCK has no effect: Hisense says these are missing on some models; this manual doesn’t confirm them for the AP12.
  • SMART or ECONOMY does nothing: check you aren’t in Super mode (or Smart mode, for Economy).
  • The temperature won’t change: Fan Only has no set temperature, and Dry allows only a small adjustment.
  • The timer or your settings have gone: this happens when the remote’s batteries are taken out. Set the clock and timer again.
  • The unit switched itself off overnight: Sleep turns it off after 8 hours.

Common questions

Can I control this portable from my phone?

Hisense says Wi-Fi control is available only on units with a Wi-Fi logo on the control panel. This manual doesn’t include any app setup steps.

Does this guide apply to my Hisense wall-mounted split?

No. Hisense Chile’s wall-split user manual refers to a separate remote-control manual, and this portable’s remote text marks several functions as not suitable for portables, so the two can’t be assumed to match. Use your split unit’s remote manual instead.
